This year’s Canada Day marks the sesquicentennial anniversary of confederation… but most importantly it marks the real start of Summer. Both locals and visitors to Nelson love to make the most of the warm weather and long daylight by getting outdoors and checking out some of the nearby activities.
Those that like to get the toughest part of the day out of the way early head to nearby Pulpit Rock where gulps for air and burning legs are soothed by cool winds and spectacular views of downtown Nelson. With sunrise set for 4:47am on Canada Day, make sure you set an alarm if you want to catch the first morning rays.
Nelson’s Lakeside Park is a popular destination, playing host to fireworks, market booths, a sandcastle competition and cake! It also boasts plenty of shady spots for families to picnic and the lake provides a refreshing dip for those that like to splash about.
Temperatures are set to hit 29˚C on Saturday. So we’re going to do what Nelson Whitewater Rafting and Nelson Paddleboard and Kayak Rentals do best; get out on the water! We have whitewater rafting trips going down the Slocan River’s cool waters all weekend long. For those who like to take fate into their own hands, starting July 4 we will start running our inflatable kayak trips down the Class II and III Facchina Rapids.
Don’t feel like tackling the rapids, but still keen to dip your toes? Kayak and paddleboards are available to rent for 1 hour, 2 hours or all day from our downtown marina office. We are located behind the Prestige Lakeside Resort just minutes from downtown Baker Street, perfect if you need to clear your head after a morning visiting stores.
This year’s Canada Day has been 150 years in the making, so get out there and make the most of it!
